Officer Joseph Abrusci started his career in Mount Olive as a special officer in December 1981 until February 1983 when he was hired as a full-time officer. Prior to his retirement he was assigned to the Patrol Division and was a member of the Morris County Fatal Accident unit, assisting with serious and fatal accident investigations. Abrusci is a certified Accident Reconstructionist, Standardized Field Sobriety/Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Instructor and a Drug Recognition Evaluator as well as instructor. He is the President of the New Jersey Drug Recognition Expert Association and is the region three representative of the DRE Program for the International Chiefís of Police, which encompasses the states of Maryland, north through Maine and the eastern half of Canada. Officer Abrusci has received numerous departmental awards including two Knights of Columbus Shield Awards, a Medal of Honor, Exceptional Duty Award, two Meritorious Service Awards, two Live Saving Awards, six Honorable Service Awards, a Grand Cordon, an Educational Achievement Award and a Program Development Award. He has also received a Medal of Valor from the NJ State Fraternal Order of Police, their highest award. He has headed up all three versions of the departmentís Cop Card Programs. Abrusci retired in June 2011 after 30 years of dedicated service to the residents of Mount Olive Township.
