Detective Mark Smith, a 1980 graduate of Mount Olive High School, started his career in Mount Olive as a police dispatcher in 1983. Two years later he was sworn in as a patrolman and served in the Patrol Division until being transferred to the Investigation Division where he served from 1996 to 2007. Detective Smith has received numerous departmental awards including the 1998 Americanism Award/Police Officer of the Year from the Musconetcong American Legion Post 278, a Meritorious Service Award, two Honorable Service Awards, four Grand Cordons and a two Life Saving Awards. Detective Smith graduated from the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Course as well as the Arson Investigators Course at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD. He has received additional training in homicide investigation, computer crimes and missing persons investigation. Smith is an FBI trained sniper and hostage negotiator and was assigned to the Department's Special Operations Unit. He is currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice at the County College of Morris.
