Scott joined the force in 1986, after transferring from another department. Since coming to Mt. Olive, he served in the Patrol Division until his transfer to Support Services in 1996. In March 2006 Scott was promoted to Sergeant of the Support Services Division. Other duties include being the department's Traffic Officer, Chairperson and liaison to Mount Olive Municipal Alliance Committee, Court/Prosecutor Liaison as well as School Resource/Liaison Officer. Sergeant Van Ness, known as "Officer Scott", is one of the department's D.A.R.E. Officers. In 2001 he was selected DARE Officer of the Year, chosen from over 1000 DARE officers. He is a member of the Morris County Fatal Accident Unit, overseen by the county prosecutor's office. He also has received departmental and community awards including Honorable Service, Grand Cordon, and Volunteer of the Year by the Governor's Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, as well as Officer of the Year by the American Legion.
Scott has testified before the Senate Committee of Law and Public Safety in reference to underage drinking. He is a past president of FOP Lodge 122 and is currently the secretary. He developed a Road Champs replica Mt. Olive police car which is now available to the public through this website or police headquarters. The proceeds benefit the members of the lodge and those in need.
Sgt. Van Ness retired in July 2012 after 26 years of dedicated service to the residents of Mount Olive Township.
